When Scrapbooking Gives You Lemons

scrapbooking lemonsSometimes scrapbooking just isn’t easy.

Sometimes you have crappy photos. Blurry, dark, too far away, etc.

Sometimes you don’t even HAVE a photo.

Sometimes you can’t remember all of the details for your journaling.

Sometimes you don’t have the perfect paper or embellishments.

What do you do when scrapbooking gives you lemons?

Make lemonade of course!

Sure Alice, but how do you do that?

All of the lemons, or problems, for not scrapbooking are really just excuses.

Stop making excuses!

Find a way.

Not everything will work.

It’s true. Not everything you do will work.

You’ll get stuck. You’ll make a mistake. You’ll make layouts that feel boring or uninspiring.

How do you break out of the rut?

Try something new but be prepared to fail. Yes, it happens.

Here’s a real example.

I was creating some watercolour background paper for a layout the other day.

I created a beautiful piece of paper, but it wasn’t right for the page I was making.

WIN – pretty paper

FAIL – not the right paper for this page

Instead of getting disheartened and giving up, I started over and created a new sheet of watercolour paper that was perfect.

That could have been good enough, but to make this lemon into lemonade I had to take it to the next level.

I created some adorable little birthday cards with the paper.

I shared some details on Periscope and I’m posting my scopes on YouTube but you can watch here!

These little birthday cards turned out so well and they wouldn’t have existed if I had not “messed up” by creating the watercolour paper that wasn’t right for the page I was creating at the time.

Isn’t that some nice “scrapbooking lemonade”? 😉

When scrapbooking gives you lemons… make birthday cards!

That worked this time.

There are ways to apply it to your scrapbook pages too.

How to make Lemonade for your scrapbooks

It all depends on the problem. Here’s some things to try.

Bad photo? Play with it in editing. Sometimes turning it to black and white works for photos that have poor colour. If there are no ways to improve it with editing, print it small. Even a small, bad photo can help you tell a great story.

No photo? What else can you do to represent the subject of your story? A different photo taken at another time? An image from the internet? A postcard or piece of memorabilia? If there is absolutely nothing that you can use as an alternate then there’s nothing stopping you from creating a layout without a photo!

Memory fuzzy? If you can’t remember details for your journaling find someone to ask. You’ll be surprised at what you can piece together when you get someone else’s perspective. If that doesn’t work try making observations about the photo and telling a story that inspires you instead of worrying about what was happening at the time of the picture.

No perfect paper or embellishments? This is easy… make it! If it doesn’t turn out well the first time that paper might be destined for something else.

Don’t let excuses get in the way. Find a way.

As I’ve looked around my scrapbook room with that sinking feeling in the bottom of my stomach I’ve often wished for a good fairy or helpful elves to come and magically clean up the room.

You’ve done it too, right? Closed your eyes, made a wish, and opened them to find out that nothing had changed. Dang fairytales… you had for me for a second!

I have a new plan. I’m going to BE SMART

No self-clean

… and just close the door!

This is why having a scrapbook room is so much better than scrapping at the kitchen table. The door. 😉

Blue Love Layout With Ombre Watercolour

Love layout with BLUE ombre hearts. Gorgeous!Once in a while it happens. I end up with a photo that I truly LOVE!

This time it was a photo of my husband and myself together! Yay!

I couldn’t wait to scrapbook this photo and I wanted to make sure that the scrapbook page I created would be extra special.

Have you ever had a leftover bit of paper that is just too good to get rid of? Of course! I found a cool piece of paper that I had cut hearts out of for another scrapbook layout.

Isn’t this a cool looking leftover? Wouldn’t you have saved it too?

The question was… what was I going to do with it? Hmmmm…

I decided that playing with ombre watercolour effect would be a pretty fun thing to do. Not only would I get to play with my paints, but the results are always so gorgeous, even if I lack skills in the painting department. 😉

After painting this watercolour paper using shades of blue…

Why Blue?

It made a pretty contrast against the hearts and I love creating an ombre effect with shades of blue. <3

I also love that it’s not a traditional colour for a “LOVE” layout!

Looking at it, I decided I needed the hearts to be a bit more defined, so I traced them with a white gel pen.

The Layout!

Here’s the layout with the photo I love!

Don’t the blue ombre hearts look awesome? Love it!

Love layout with BLUE ombre hearts. Gorgeous!

Let’s talk about photo effects for a second. I considered printing the photo in black and white, but instead I really liked the faded colour effect more. Do you play with faded colours on your photos? It’s a cool way to keep the colour, but make it subtle.

I went old-school and pulled out some mulberry paper to slip behind the photo. I love the softness it adds to the page while remaining translucent.

I was watching a friend’s Periscope today and several of her recent pages have had doilies. I loved her pages so I thought it would be fun to add them to my layout too! Thanks for the inspiration Cara!

Design Tips to Try:

  • Use blue or another non-traditional colour on a “LOVE” layout.
  • Try ombre. It’s fun to create and it’s beautiful too!
  • Watercolour, if I can do it you can too. Use watercolour paper, it makes all the difference!
  • Use a special leftover that you’ve been saving because it was too good to let go of.

Red and White Colour Inspiration

When you are sitting in front of a blank page wondering what to scrapbook it can be intimidating and overwhelming. Where do you start?

One thing that makes it a whole lot easier is having a prompt to kickstart your page. In LOAD216 we are scrapbooking every day with a prompt to guide our layouts.

Page Prompt

Use the colours of the Canadian flag, red and white, to create your layout.  Since our inspiration is the Canadian flag we will spell colour with a U, that’s the Canadian way! (Have you noticed I tend to favour Canadian spellings on this site?)

My son Joe sent me a photo of himself with the beautiful frost we had on the trees. I loved that my son could appreciate the beauty and that he was enabling my scrapbooking! I used red and white for the page, inspired by the Canadian flag, and I also butted each end of the page with the red sections, kind of like turning the flag on its side.

LOAD216 Winter Wonderland DAY8FULL

I often do my journaling by hand. I do cheat and pencil in some straight lines, which I usually go back and erase once the ink is completely dry.  (Who am I kidding… more than once I’ve smeared the  ink because I started erasing too soon!) 😉

LOAD216 Winter Wonderland DAY8CLOSE

With this detail photo you can see the bit of shine that I’ve stamped on the background paper using Tsukineko All-Purpose Ink. I’ll share a link for this at the end of the post!

Journaling

Joe attended a play at his school with Jonas. Not only did he notice the beautiful hoar frost that was coating the trees like frosting, but he had his photo taken and sent it to me! I love that my son appreciates the spectacular show of nature, and my desire to scrapbook! <3

Design Tip

Let the prompt inspire you, not restrict you! Just because the prompt is to use red and white doesn’t mean you can’t use other colours. Get started and see where you end up! There are no rules that you MUST follow in scrapbooking. Do what makes you happy!

This is the white ink I used to stamp the snowflakes on the white background. It’s so pretty! I use a foam brush to paint it on to the stamp and then apply it to the paper.

Are you ready to get your scrap on? Let your creativity shine!

Mountain Flight

Do you use prompts to inspire your scrapbook pages?

If you’ve ever participated in a LOAD, (LayOut A Day challenge) you probably have! This month is LOAD216 and I’m excited to be the featured scrapper for Saturday, February 6th.

Today’s prompt is:

Geography – What story can you tell related to geography?

My husband has a small plane and absolutely loves to go flying. He found a way for me to fall in love with flying too, by taking me on a flight to the Rocky Mountains. I approached the journaling in a fun and playful way by starting with a question and then sharing my answer. I used a large photo on the page as I wanted to focus on the gorgeous view we had from the plane.

LOAD216 Mountain Flight DAY6FULL

Journaling:

How do you get your wife hooked on flying? Take her on a flight to the breathtaking Rocky Mountains. We flew to Valemount and had a spectacular view of Mount Robson. Wow! This world we live in is filled with overwhelming beauty. I’m so lucky to be able to enjoy it right rom my backyard. Flying opens doors to new experiences and I’m excited about that. Well played Jonas, well played!
