Day 20: the Family Photo

Do you send out a family photo with your Christmas cards/emails? Maybe you like to gather the family and do a fun photo shoot. My husband’s family is great at lining everyone up for a group photo every time we are together for the holidays. There are many ways you might include your family photo in your scrapbook.

Photo Ideas:

  • The photo included in your Christmas cards
  • The family in front of your Christmas tree
  • Other ‘creative’ Christmas photo ideas (wearing Santa hats or reindeer antlers, wearing pj’s, the opportunities are limitless!)
  • Take a group photo on Christmas day
  • Include a family photo from your childhood
  • Recreate an old family photo… use the same people, and a similar setting… there is lots of ideas online for this. FUN!

Journaling Ideas:

  • Describe the “story” of taking the photo, did anything funny happen? Who hates having their photo taken?
  • How did you choose your photo “theme”
  • Do you send the photo in your Christmas cards?
  • Create a quick bio of each family member (name, age, wish list item, favourite Christmas cookie, etc.)
  • Include a Christmas poem or quote
  • If you have a family photo from your childhood you can compare it to a recent photo or share a nostalgic story
  • If you have recreated an old family photo, share both photos together on a page and talk about the similarities and differences.

I hope you will be inspired to capture the magic of your family photo on your scrapbook pages! What is the coolest idea you’ve seen for a creative family photo? Share your ideas in the comments!

Day 19: Santa Letters

This one really makes me smile! Letters to Santa are such a heartwarming part of Christmas. (Don’t you want to write a wish list, mail it off, and hope that it will come true too?) As a bonus, in Canada if you write a letter to Santa he will write back to you!

Over the years my boys have written some interesting letters. One year my youngest son wanted a monster that he had INVENTED!  A couple of years ago my older son emailed me his Santa letter, and it included links to the items he wanted!

I always make a copy of the letter (hey I AM a scrapbooker) and then the boys can mail them. Here’s a few ideas for including Santa letters in your scrapbook.

Photo Ideas:

  • A copy of the letter
  • A photo of your child writing the letter
  • Mailing the letter

Journaling Ideas:

  • This one is EASY!  The letter does most of the work for you!
  • Your thoughts on the letter.
  • A translation of your child’s ‘unique’ handwriting/printing 🙂
  • Memories of writing to Santa from your childhood.

I hope you will capture the magic of Santa letters on your Christmas scrapbook pages this year!

What is the craziest thing your child has asked Santa for? Leave your response in the comments below!

Day 18: Christmas Music & Carolling

I have a confession.  I’m one of those people that truly LOVES Christmas music! I’m excited to hear the familiar tunes over the intercom of every single store I shop in after November 11th. Whether you are as excited to hear Christmas music as I am, or not, it is probably a big part of your life too. Have you ever scrapbooked it? Here’s a few ideas to get you started.

Consider several ways Christmas music is a part of your life:

  • CD’s/ mp3’s
  • Radio and TV (Christmas Specials and Commercials)
  • Carolling
  • Concerts *NOTE: See DAY 9 for more ways to capture the magic of your concerts!
  • Musical instruments/lessons

Photo Ideas:

  • A stack of your favourite Christmas CD’s
  • A photo of your ipod (bonus points for making it festive!)
  • Photos of you carolling with your family/friends
  • Photos of carollers that visit you
  • Photos of you or your kids practicing their musical instrument, or performing at a gathering
  • A photo of your musical instrument

Journaling Ideas:

  • What is your favourite Christmas song? Who sings it? Why do you love it? How does it make you feel?
  • Talk to your family members to find out their favourite songs too.
  • Do you love a certain Christmas album?
  • Which Christmas songs were a part of your childhood? What style are they? Crooner, country, classical…
  • Use the lyrics, or a quote from your favourite song on your page.
  • A song title can make a great scrapbook title too.
  • Carolling: Who do you go carolling with? Are you a part of a choir? Do you have a group of friends or family that goes carolling every year? Where do you go? What songs do you sing? Is it spontaneous or is it planned and rehearsed?
  • Musical Instrument: Who plays the instrument? How long have they played? Which songs are they learning for Christmas? Did they have an opportunity to perform? Why do they enjoy that instrument?

I hope you are inspired to capture the magic of Christmas songs on your scrapbook pages. I’d love to know what your favourite Christmas song is. Share YOUR favourite song in the comments!

Day 17: Favourite Christmas Movies

Does your family watch a special Christmas movie every year? If I had to choose just one I’d say my favourite is the classic 1964 stop motion animation Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. I always felt so bad for the poor misfit toys and I remember thinking that I could love an elephant with spots! Here’s a few ideas to help you include your favourite Christmas movies in your scrapbook.

Photo Ideas:

  • A stack of your favourite Christmas movies
  • Your family cozied up by the TV

Journaling Ideas:

  • List each family members favourite movie
  • Make a list of ALL of your favourite Christmas movies
  • Do you watch the same movie every year?
  • Do you watch the movie on a certain day
  • Do you have a special “movie watching” tradition?
  • What is your favourite movie quote?
  • Describe what makes this movie so special
  • Do you have memories of a special movie from your childhood?

Are you going to capture the magic of your favourite Christmas movie(s) in your scrapbook this year? Leave me a comment sharing your favourite!

Day 16: Favourite Christmas Books

Our bookshelf has a section dedicated to Christmas books. On that shelf are a few family favourites, like the copy of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer that belonged to my husband as a child, The Night Before Christmas (a classic!) and Mooseltoe by Margie Palatini and Henry Cole, an adorable rhyming story of a father moose trying to create a perfectly perfect Christmas. As these books are a special part of our Christmas experience they should definitely be included in our Christmas scrapbook.

Photo Ideas:

  • Photo of your child reading his/her favourite Christmas book
  • Photo of you reading to your child
  • Think about your photo location, is the background festive? Is it a common place for reading in your home?
  • Can you ‘sneak’ a photo without your child knowing to capture them ‘in the moment’?
  • Photo of a stack of favourite Christmas books

Journaling Ideas:

  • Do you have any stories that you loved since you were a child?
  • Have you discovered a new favourite from your kids’ books?
  • What book is everyone’s favourite in your house? Does each person have their own favourite, or do you all like one special story?
  • Is it almost impossible to choose a favourite?
  • Have your choices changed over the years? What about your kids’ choices?

Including your favourite Christmas books on your scrapbook pages is a wonderful way to capture the magic of Christmas. It is a way to tell your Christmas story. Are you going to include Christmas books on your scrapbook pages this season? Leave me a comment and tell me what your favourite Christmas book is.
