Christmas Candy

Day 5: Christmas Candies

Who doesn’t like candy? Even better is Christmas candy. There’s something about the fact that you only eat it once a year that makes it special.  Do you make Christmas candy? That’s an awesome opportunity for scrapbooking! Even if you buy your treats, that is no reason to leave them out of your Christmas scrapbook pages.

Photo ideas:

  • Gather your favorite candies to make a pile of treats.
  • Create a custom piece of candy-covered home decor.
  • Fill vases with your favorite candies.
  • Photograph your child eating a candy, or eyeing them up!
  • Photograph the whole family enjoying them together.

Journaling ideas:

  • Make a list of everyone’s favorite Christmas candy.
  • Make a matching chart to show everyone’s favorite candy. Put photos of family members on the left and candies on the right.  Have your kids draw lines to connect the candy to the person.
  • Create interactive flaps that you lift to reveal each person’s favorite candy.
  • Do you have childhood memories of special candies or treats? Tie those into the journalling on your page.

What is your favorite Christmas candy?  Do you love candy canes, gum drops, chocolate covered cherries, peanut brittle, popcorn balls… or is a Christmas orange your idea of the perfect treat?  Share your favourites in the comments!

Christmas CookiesDay 4: Christmas Baking

Mmmm… Christmas baking.  Just thinking about the delicious treats of Christmas makes my mouth water.  Even if you are not someone who bakes a lot, I’ll bet you make some kind of special treat for the holidays.  (If not, you can still scrapbook your favourite treats… and you could always cheat and ‘fake’ some baking photos 😉

Photo ideas:

  • Cookies baking in the oven. (Just open the door and take a quick snap!)
  • The cookies lined up on the counter.
  • One of the kids sneaking a cookie.  (This happens at your house too, right?)
  • Photos of your kids licking the spoon, or ‘helping’ in some other way.
  • Decorating the cookies.

Journaling ideas:

  • What are your favourite Christmas treats? Your kids’ favourites?
  • Which treats do you miss from your childhood? Who made them? What made them so special?
  • Include your recipe on the page.
  • List the items you ‘have to’ bake every year.

What is THE treat you can’t imagine not having at Christmas?  Is it a secret family recipe?  Share your favourites in the comments!

Santa PhotoDay 3: The Santa Photo

It’s a Christmas tradition. Dressing up the kids and taking them to the mall, or community centre where Santa makes his presence known with a “Ho, Ho, Ho!” The kids climb up on Santa’s knee and share their Christmas wishes and are rewarded with a candy cane. Or… Mom tries to coerce her unwilling 2 year old onto Santa’s knee, with the toddler crying and reaching for mommy.

One way or another you probably have a Santa photo or two to scrapbook! Don’t worry whether or not it is the ‘perfect’ Santa photo, or a slightly different version, it will still be a Christmas memory to cherish.

Journaling options:

  • Describe your child’s reaction to Santa.
  • Narrate the conversation your child had with Santa.
  • Divulge your child’s Christmas Wish List.

Have your kids surprised you with their visit to Santa? Share your funniest/sweetest/most memorable Santa story in my comments!

Gingerbread HouseDay 2: The Gingerbread House

Gingerbread houses are a fun and sweet treat that are a Christmas specialty.  As if building them wasn’t enough fun, you’ll enjoy having it set up in the house, and you may sneak the occasional candy from the house or yard!  Even if you don’t have kids there’s nothing stopping you from creating your own gingerbread house. Invite a friend for twice the fun!  You don’t even have to bake your own gingerbread for the house (although that does add an extra opportunity to scrapbook!), kits are readily available and you can always try the graham cracker house too!

Don’t forget the camera!  You can capture photos of:

  • The ‘before’ photo of the candy.
  • Decorating the house.
  • A photo of you (or your kids) with the beautifully decorated house.

What kind of gingerbread house do you make?  Do you bake your own, use a kit, use graham crackers, or do you have another great way to make one?  (Hint: Your explanations make great journaling!!) Please share your construction advice in the comments!

Advent Calendar

Day 1: The Advent Calendar

I LOVE advent calendars!  I love the ones you hide treasures in. I love the super-cool Lego ones.  I even love the ones that come with the little waxy piece of chocolate.  I remember having the chocolate ones as a kid, and how excited I was opening up one door every day until Christmas.

Do you have/use an advent calendar? Scrapbook it!

Photo ideas:

  • Your child (or you) opening the treasure!
  • The calendar.
  • The treasure!

Journaling ideas:

  • Describe the treasures.  If it’s something you found, why did you choose it?
  • Share your child’s reaction to the calendar.
  • Share your own reaction to the calendar… why do you still do it?
  • Reminisce about advent calendars from your childhood.
  • Do ALL of the Above!

Don’t forget, a scrapbook without your story is simply a beautiful photo album.  Let’s make yours a book of memories!

Leave me a comment telling me what kind of advent calendar you use.  Are you going to scrapbook it this year?
