Day 10: Christmas Lights

One of the things that make Christmas such a beautiful time of year is Christmas Lights. I love driving around to see the lights on the houses. I love it when you see a house that is “over the top”. (National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation style!) Have you ever included Christmas lights on your scrapbook pages?

Photo Ideas:

  • Lights on your house
  • Lights in your house
  • Photograph the process of putting up the lights at your house
  • Lights from around your neighborhood
  • Christmas light displays in your town (ie. Candy Cane Lane, or a festival of Christmas Lights)
  • Try taking photos of the lights using interesting photography techniques (bokeh effect)

Journaling Ideas:

  • How do you feel when you see Christmas lights?
  • How does your family react to the lights?
  • Make a top 10 list of favorite Christmas lights around town.
  • What are your Christmas light memories from your childhood?

Do you have more ways to include Christmas lights on your scrapbook pages? Please share your tips in the comments section!

Day 9: Christmas Parties & Concerts

Christmas parties and concerts are a big part of the Christmas season. Christmas parties are a great chance to pull out your pretty clothes and get “nice” photos with your loved ones. Christmas concerts offer a similar opportunity… when the kids are dressed up out comes the camera!

One of my favorite concerts was when my oldest son was in kindergarten. He got up on stage and yawned for a full 20 minutes. At the time I was somewhat mortified, but looking back it was definitely a concert to remember!

There are plenty of opportunities to capture the magic of the Christmas party or concert in your scrapbook. Here’s some ideas to get you started:

Photo Ideas:

  • The performers
  • Make sure you get an ‘up-close’ photo if your child is singing
  • At a dinner take a photo from the end of the buffet table, showing all of the food!
  • Special decorations that help to set the scene
  • Your child with their friends after the concert, or at the party
  • You!  All dressed up for the event, with your family or friends.

Journaling Ideas:

  • Were you (or your kids) excited about the event?
  • What was your (or their) favorite part?
  • Did anything funny happen?
  • Did it remind you of another time/event… share that story too!

Don’t forget to include the program or other memorabilia from the event! Which do you love more, Christmas parties or concerts? I’d love to hear your best story in the comments!

Day 8: Christmas Parade

My hometown has a Christmas Parade every year, and it’s an event not to be missed! It’s not just a parade. There’s a Christmas market. Stores stay open with special late night shopping promotions. You wander up and down mainstreet bumping into old friends and acquaintances.  They start a huge bonfire in the middle of mainstreet. There is free hot chocolate available at several businesses. There are sleigh rides. Santa visits! You can get a photo with Santa for a couple of bucks. The floats in the parade still throw candy for the kids.  Doesn’t this sound like the perfect opportunity to capture the magic of Christmas?

Even if the parade in your town doesn’t have these small-town characteristics I’ll bet there are plenty of great opportunities to Capture the Magic!

Photo Ideas:

  • The kids anxiously waiting for the parade to begin
  • The parade floats
  • The kids’ reactions to the floats
  • The characters that accompany the floats
  • Any interactions between the float characters and your kids
  • Other activities held in conjunction with the parade

Journaling Ideas:

  • Were your kids excited to go to the parade?
  • What part were they looking forward to the most?
  • How did they respond when the saw Santa?
  • What was their favorite part?
  • Explain what the conditions were that night (day).  Was it cold? Snowy?
  • Do you have memories to share from your childhood?
  • How is your child’s experience different (same) as yours.  Are you just as excited as they are?

The Christmas Parade will be a great addition to your Christmas scrapbooking pages. I hope this inspires you to include the Christmas Parade in your scrapbook this year.

Day 7: Family Traditions

Every family has some kind of tradition that makes Christmas special. As a child my family always opened ALL of our presents on Christmas Eve. Santa would “magically” arrive while my brothers and I were getting into our new Christmas pyjamas.

Photo Ideas:  The photos will depend on your tradition, but here’s a couple of fun ideas:

  • Look for an interesting way to capture the story in your photos.
  • Try a photo journal… tell the story with step by step photos.
  • You may want to scrapbook a couple of traditions.

Journaling Ideas:

  • Do you still continue the tradition?
  • Why is this so special to you?
  • Describe the memories and feeling that make your tradition so special.

Don’t miss the opportunity to share your family traditions in your scrapbook this Christmas!

Share your family’s Christmas tradition in the comments.

Day 6: Christmas Beverages

Christmas has its own special beverages that I always look forward to. I love to sit by the fire curled up with a good book and a mug of hot apple cider or hot chocolate. There are a lot of ways to include your favorite Christmas drinks on your scrapbook pages.

Christmas Drinks that might  be on your list:

  • hot chocolate
  • apple cider
  • egg nog
  • cranberry juice
  • coffee with a shot of Baileys

Photo Ideas:

  • Your favorite drinks
  • Family and friends enjoying them (try to play with your location)
  • Decorating the hot chocolate with marshmallows, whipped cream and sprinkles
  • Photos of you enjoying a hot chocolate when you are at an outdoor activity (skating, sledding, sleigh rides)

Journaling Ideas:

  • Talk about the places or activities where you enjoy your favorite Christmas drink
  • Describe your favorite drink and try to explain why you enjoy it
  • Share special memories that involve the drink

What is your favorite kind of Christmas beverage?  Do you love egg nog?  Does the thought of a hot cup of apple cider make you want to curl up by the fire with a good book?  Share your favorite in the comments!
