It’s both rare and amazing. The kind of deal that almost never comes along.
Today, May 6, 2017 is National Scrapbooking Day and that means great deals are everywhere!
Normally when registration closes for a layout a day challenge, that’s it. That’s all. You missed the boat.
But not today.
For one day only LATE registration has opened for LOAD517 Legends of Hollywood.
So far there’s been prompts inspired by Charlie Chaplin, Shirley Temple and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and that’s only brought us to 1937.
Here’s a sneak peek at the layouts I’ve made so far in this challenge:
I made this one using the Rhonna and Rhonna collage apps!
Using the My Mind’s Eye “In Bloom” paper.
I’m excited because this is only 5 days in and I’ve already created 5 layouts! May is going to be a great month!
You not only can join the challenge, but you can save $10 by using the code “UNICORN10”.
Don’t let this unicorn slip through your fingers.
Need to know more about the layout a day challenge… you can read all of the details HERE, with no commitment… so take a peek, and today could be your lucky day!
Are you ready to take the Layout a Day challenge to scrapbook every day in May?
Don’t miss out.
Here’s why I love layout a day.
I finally stop collecting scrapbook supplies and finally start using them!
Finally put those scrappy supplies to good use!
If you’ve been a bit of a scrapbook collector and shopper, then you might enjoy actually putting your supplies to good use too.
This happy stack of layouts is the result of a LOAD challenge!
When I tell people what I’m doing in May they always say, “I could never do that!”
That’s EXACTLY what I thought too, the first time I signed up on a whim.
Let’s be real. Not every scrapper will complete a layout every day for the month. And that’s okay. Imagine doing half of that. Or a third. No matter what the magic number is for you, you’ll finish the month with a sense of pride and satisfaction, just looking at all of those layouts you’ve completed!
Let me tell you about my first LOAD challenge.
I signed up, thinking that even if I complete a few pages I’d be happy, because at least I’d be getting something done. The first day was easy. I made my page, uploaded it to the gallery and gave myself a pat on the back. The next few days went much the same way. I found that because I was part of the challenge I held myself accountable. Other scrappers were commenting on my layouts with supportive words and encouragement. By the end of the first week I realized, “I was doing it! I was scrapbooking a layout a day!” The momentum kept me going, then I had a difficult day. With the craziness of life I just didn’t have time to scrapbook, but by now I was invested. I ran to my scrap space. I grabbed a photo, an awesome piece of scrapbook paper, added a title and dashed of journaling right on the background paper. 20 minutes later I’d produced the fastest layout I’d EVER made. (This was before you could create a layout on your phone in 5 minutes!) And I liked it. It turns out that scrapbooking every day had taught me a few things about scrapbooking. Not every page was a masterpiece, but a lot of them were really great. I also realized I was scrapbooking more stories, and that made all the difference. I loved the layouts and I loved LOAD. So naturally when the next LOAD challenge came I signed up. You know what happened the next time? I finished the entire next one too, right? Not quite! I finished 7 layouts. That’s it. I failed, right? No! I FINISHED 7 LAYOUTS! My average on a good month was 4, so to finish 7 was still fantastic, and they were pages I loved that told great stories. That’s the magic of LOAD!
Want to join me? Deadline to register is April 30, 2017.
As today is the first day of spring I thought it would be fun to celebrate spring with a spring-themed blog hop. After you check out this sweet spring layout don’t miss the link for the hop to see some more spring-inspired projects!
Lately I’ve been so inspired by watercolour. It seems to be everywhere I look.
Now, let’s get real. I’m not a watercolour artist.
But I’m so inspired that I’ve been playing! Isn’t that the best?
Not everything has worked out quite the way I wish it would have. I’ve had some pretty bad watercolour disasters. I’ve made some ugly stuff. So I threw it out and tried again.
I haven’t taken any classes or even watched some tutorials that might have helped. Hmmm… why haven’t I done this? That’s a pretty good idea, and maybe then I’d have fewer watercolour disasters.
Moving on.
This weekend I saw a gorgeous gift bag and I knew I had to do something with it.
I took a quick picture of the bag…
The bag wasn’t actually mine, so I couldn’t just chop it up for my scrapbook, so I thought perhaps I should play with my watercolours to see if I could emulate the beauty of the bag.
It’s obvious the creator of the art on the bag knows what they’re doing, so it’s the perfect piece of inspiration.
Here’s my creation. I’m pretty happy!
I realized I hadn’t added any pictures of my spring flowers to my ‘gardening’ scrapbook. (Yes, I have one those. I’m not much of a gardener, so I feel I must be diligent about enjoying my small triumphs.)
As you can see with the pretty background paper I didn’t need much embellishment.
I matted the photo on black cardstock so it would pop from the background, added the Heidi Swapp letters for the title, used a Copic Multiliner pen for the journaling, and added a little metal flower from Close to My Heart.
Done!
What is inspiring you this spring? Are you going to be doing some watercolour? Do you have any video suggestions I should watch to help my watercolour technique, I’m all ears!
Hop on over to Alison’s blog, Alison Day Designs where she’s posting about sunshine, flowers and rebirth to celebrate spring!
One of the best tips that help me with pocket scrapping is printing my photos at home. I have a Canon MG6620 printer. It’s not the most amazing printer in the world, but it prints photos better than I can get locally, so I’m fairly happy with it.
I shared a AWESOME trick that I use for scrapbooking, adding a video to a layout. This is SO EASY to do, and makes it really fun to look through your albums. Here’s the blog post that teaches you HOW TO ADD A VIDEO TO A LAYOUT.
This ‘reluctant driver’ layout shows my son driving. I think it will be interesting to look back on this memory as he gets older. I can’t imagine this will last for long. As I’ve previously included a bit of this story in my pocket album I may add this to his personal scrapbook.
With our family photo shoot I didn’t have a lot to say. The page came together very quickly and it wasn’t even that hard to decide which photos I would include.
I decided to use a smaller page protector for the Halloween insert. It’s a 10×12″ protector. I was able to include plenty of fun Halloween photos and talk a bit about having our Japanese exchange student here for Halloween.
Normally we carve pumpkins at home every year, so I was a bit disappointed that we weren’t able to do this. I was happy when my son gave me pics of our student carving a pumpkin at the party for the exchange students and hosts.
I have three 12×12″ layouts dedicated to telling the story of having our exchange student stay with us.
The exchange students only stay for a week, but it’s a busy week. I didn’t have pics of some of his events, but overall was able to show some of his experience here.
Here’s the video I put together with the short clips from his trip. I do an album flip through of the photo album I created for Koyata at the end of the video.
I didn’t do any fancy editing in the video, just put all of the short clips together in iMovie and uploaded it to YouTube. By keeping it VERY simple I was able to get it done so it could be included.
I started the month of November with a 12×12 layout.
Then I printed this digital layout I’d made in the Project Life app as an 8.5×8.5″ layout. (It’s mounted on 9×9″ cardstock to fit into a page protector.) I may add this to my son’s album, but maybe I’ll leave it here and print it again for his album… the bonus of having a digital layout!
I’ve used a 10×12″ page to include a snowshoe trip in the mountains. I loved that I could include so many photos from the trip. The 10 little square photos are just a bit smaller than 2″ square and document my progress as I make the climb up the mountain. I’ve wanted to scrapbook about that journey so I’m glad I’ve finally done it!
Under a flip flap (they are from Close to My Heart) I have more journaling and a QR code with a link to a video I put together with clips from our mountain adventure.
A few more pics and this layout was done!
Finally, I finished off the month of November with a few more random events. That’s one of the things I LOVE about pocket scrapping, I share more random stories than I do on my traditional layouts. I can’t imagine giving up my traditional pages, but I love how by doing both methods I’m able to include such a diverse look at our life.
My Thoughts…
In the end I’m happy with the progress I made. I might have ‘only’ scrapped two months, but as you can see they were filled with many fun activities and adventures which were so much fun to include.
Looking at these pages makes me more determined than ever to go back and finish more of the missing year, and especially determined to stay on top of my current pocket pages so I don’t have this problem again!
The Plan…
I actually have a super-smart plan to get my pocket pages done. Once a month I host an online scrapbook crop. It’s a free event, I scrapbook live on video and other scrappers from around the world join me. I create a 12×12 layout and a pocket page using kits from Gossamer Blue. We also have a draw for a kit from Gossamer Blue for one lucky attendee.

I did, until I started doing Scrapbook LIVE! This is a free, monthly, online scrapbook crop. Take a peek at the video below and you’ll see what it’s all about.
Here’s a quick summary:
I scrapbook live on video for about two hours
Others join in via video, audio, or typing in the chat box
I create a 12×12 layout and a pocket page spread with kits from Gossamer Blue
We have a draw for a free kit from Gossamer Blue
It’s as close to being at a ‘real’ crop as possible!
Here are the layouts I created:
The 12×12 layout created with the Gossamer Blue Main Kit.
Here’s the pocket page, created with the Gossamer Blue Life Pages kit. I made a single 12×12 pocket this time featuring a single event, my son’s 18th birthday.
